La Tómbola Massacre
Seventeen years after the La Tómbola Massacre, in Sabana Seca, Toa Baja, we return to an opening night that ended with the deaths of eight people and an unborn child, and that still holds questions that are hard to close. In this new Archive we review court rulings, official press releases and press coverage from 2009 to 2024 to reconstruct what happened that night, what Palo de Goma was, and what federal prosecutors argued about the reasons for the attack.
We also examine what came after: a neighborhood that kept silent, the capture of the main suspect in St. Thomas, a first trial in 2013 that ended in a life sentence, the annulment of that trial in 2016 over an emptied courtroom, the 2020 decision that barred prosecutors from seeking the death penalty again, and a second trial in 2023 followed by a new life sentence in 2024.
As part of the Archive we also include a timeline with the source for each date, and a section that gathers what the publications say differently from one another, such as the time of the attack, the number of wounded, and the date of the 2013 sentence.
